to digital broadcasts by full power television stations was completed on June 12, 2009. However, the TV Converter Box Coupon Program remains ready to support consumers through the shut off of analog broadcasts by providing coupons to eligible households.Consumers have a variety of options. These include:
- Keep your existing analog TV and purchase a TV converter box, with or without a government coupon. A converter box plugs into your TV and will keep it working now that your local full power TV stations have completed the transition to digital television broadcast, or
- Connect to cable, satellite or other pay service, or
- Purchase a television with a digital tuner.
More Information
Below is information for consumers who wish to participate in the Program.
- Application Deadline. Eligible households may continue to apply for TV converter box coupons while supplies last, until July 31, 2009. Applications for coupons are accepted online, by phone, by mail and by fax. Mailed applications must be post-marked no later than July 31, 2009. Online, phone and fax applications must be made by 12 midnight Eastern Time. It typically takes nine business days to process and mail coupons. If you have applied for coupons, but not yet received them, you may check the status of your request on this Web site by selecting Check Your Application Status.
- Coupon Expiration. Coupons expire 90 days after they are mailed. The expiration date is printed on the coupon. Even though the last day to apply for coupons is July 31, 2009, consumers can use their coupons at participating retailers until they expire. Converter boxes can be purchased at most national retail stores. Consumers should call ahead to area retail stores to confirm availability of coupon-eligible converter boxes on the day they plan to shop. To find a participating retailer in your area, go to www.DTV2009.gov/VendorSearch.aspx. Coupon-eligible converter boxes also may be purchased online or by telephone and shipped directly to your home.
- Applications for Replacement Coupons. The Coupon Program is accepting applications from consumers whose coupons expired without being redeemed while supplies last, until July 31, 2009. The Coupon Program limits each U.S. household to a total of two redeemed coupons. Therefore, if you have redeemed one coupon toward the purchase of a TV converter box and the other has expired, you may request and be approved for one replacement coupon; if you have redeemed two coupons you will not be approved for additional coupons. Replacement coupons will only be issued to eligible households upon request. Consumers who wish to apply for a replacement coupon can do so online, by calling 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009), mailing an application to PO Box 2000, Portland, OR 97208 or faxing it to 1-877-DTV-4ME2 (1-877-388-4632). Deaf or hard of hearing callers may use 1-877-530-2634 (TTY).
- Coupon Waiting List and Distribution. Consumers who apply for coupons are approved on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. If the Program experiences high demand, it may be necessary for the Coupon Program to place applicants on a waiting list. Should this happen, we may distribute coupons to over-the-air only households first to ensure that as many U.S. households as possible have at least one working television now that full power TV stations have completed the transition to digital broadcasts.
- Requested Coupons Mailed via First-Class Mail. The TV Converter Box Coupons are mailed via first-class mail.
To apply for the coupon, please provide the following information. If you are a resident of a licensed nursing home, intermediate care facility or assisted living facility, you must mail in the Application Form for Nursing Home Residents.
Application Deadline. Eligible households may continue to apply for TV converter box coupons while supplies last, until July 31, 2009. Applications for coupons will continue to be accepted online, by phone, by mail and by fax until 12 midnight Eastern Time.
