Fishing fans will reap the benefits of a day dedicated to highlighting the importance of conserving the state’s waterways. Saturday is “It’s Our River Day.” As part of the celebrations, adults and children can fish for free in more than 100 state parks and wildlife and natural areas. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says that means people can fish that day without buying the required fishing licenses. It’s all part of the fifth annual “It’s Our River Day.”
Gov. Pat Quinn’s office says there are more than 60 events going on around the state. Each year on the third Saturday in September, communities across Illinois celebrate “It’s Our River Day” by organizing educational, recreational, and/or beautification activities along their local rivers. The Illinois River Coordinating Council, a collaborative committee chaired by the Illinois Lt. Governor, launched It’s Our River Day in 2004 as a fun way to encourage businesses, clubs, municipalities, and others to celebrate their watersheds.

One of those events is at Chicago’s Navy Pier. Students will paint rain barrels and learn about water conservation.
