Free Lunch Concert: Special Consensus Bluegrass – Sep 11
This Friday, September 11, Special Consensus Bluegrass is putting on a free lunch concert at the Harold Washington Public Library downtown. The free concert is from noon-1 PM and will move indoors in case of rain. An acoustic bluegrass band that began performing in the Midwest nearly 30 years ago, The Special Consensus brings its show to the Harold Washington Public Library stage. Led by banjo player and founder Greg Cahill, The Special Consensus plays original compositions as well as traditional bluegrass standards by Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs and others.
In addition to 11 recordings and international tours, the band toured for three seasons as four-fifths of the cast in the musical Cotton Patch Gospel . In November 2003, the band received a standing ovation after its first performance on the Grand Ole Opry at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.
In 1984, The Special Consensus initiated the Traditional American Music (TAM) Program in schools across the country and began appearing on cable television and National Public Radio shows. As a result of this musical diversity, The Special Consensus has performed at the most traditional bluegrass festivals but has also been the band to bridge the gap between traditional and “progressive” bands at more diverse festivals and fairs. The Chicago Tribune calls them “truly outstanding and versatile”.
