Why not check out the Museum of Contemporary Art, a “Top 10” Chicago attraction, that is free to everyone on Tuesdays in 2017? They have free tours, where you can join an MCA Volunteer Guide for a tour of the museum’s exhibitions and collection. All tours last forty-five minutes and meet in the second-floor lobby (Tuesday at 1,2 and 6pm).
The MCA Chicago is one of the nation’s largest multidisciplinary museums devoted to the art of our time. With an international reputation for presenting groundbreaking exhibitions, the MCA documents contemporary visual culture through painting, sculpture, photography, film and video. The MCA’s collection includes approximately 6,000 works comprised of 2,500 objects and 3,500 artists’ books, attracting an average annual attendance of 250,000.
The MCA collection provides a historical context for examining continuing developments in contemporary art. It features notable strengths in minimalism, post-minimalism, conceptualism, surrealism, photography and artists books, as well as works by Chicago-based artists. Artists collected in depth include Alexander Calder, Jasper Johns, René Magritte, Ed Paschke (former Northwestern faculty member), Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol and other well-known artists.
MCA Stage, a nationally-recognized presenter of contemporary theater, dance, music and multimedia performances, features leading performers from around the world in its 300-seat theater. More information on upcoming events is available online. The MCA also features special exhibition spaces, a gift store, restaurant and a terraced sculpture garden with a view of Lake Michigan. The Museum of Contemporary Art is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The MCA is closed on Monday and on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Suggested admission to the MCA is $12 for the general public and $7 for students and senior citizens. Admission is free for MCA members, members of the military and veterans, and children age 12 and under. Illinois residents can visit the MCA for free on Tuesday.
They also host free live jazz concerts every Tuesday in the summer during “Tuesdays on the Terrace”. (click at bottom for more info) The summertime music starts at 5:30pm every Tuesday. so come early to this “Top 10” Chicago attraction and visit the galleries and then stick around for constructive entertainment accompanied by a glass of wine or a cup of Joe and a tasty snack from Puck’s Cafe.
A different, internationally-themed dinner buffet prepared by Wolfgang Puck Catering is served each week, with dishes created using fresh locally-grown produce from the MCA Farmer’s Market. For a more casual evening, guests may bring their own blanket or rent an MCA lawn chair ($5 each). Summer favorites such as hamburgers, hotdogs, and lighter fare may be purchased from the outdoor grill along with cold beverages, wine, and seasonal cocktails.
Reservations are recommended at 312.397.4034. Outside food and beverages are not allowed in the sculpture garden. In case of rain, the event takes place in Puck’s Café.
Every Tuesday the MCA is free all day and open until 8 pm.
