Down at the water level, the museum spirals five stories up, and this awesome museum provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity to explore a historic landmark bridgehouse. At river level, visitors can view the massive gears of Chicago’s most famous movable bridge and then journey through time as they experience the story of the Chicago River. Once at the top of the bridgehouse, visitors are treated to magnificent 360 views of the city and river, and will gain a whole new perspective on the beauty and complexity that is Chicago. The landmark five-story bridgehouse is alive with stories of the past, details of the bridge and vivid stories about the many people inspired by the potential of the Chicago River. Friends of the Chicago River opened the seasonal McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum in 2006 to provide new access and understanding of the dynamic relationship between Chicago and its river. OPENING UP OF MUSEUM THIS SEASON! Celebrate opening of the Museum for the season with free admission. Watch the annual bridge lift tradition during this event on May 13. Today, the Bridgehouse Museum stands as the cultural anchor of the new Chicago Riverwalk and welcomes tens of thousands of visitors every summer. Exhibits celebrate Chicago’s river and world-famous movable bridges, and visitors learn why it is important to protect the river and how to participate in its renaissance. On bridge lift days every spring and fall, the museum’s gear room truly comes to life, giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the moving gears as they lift the massive Michigan Avenue bridge leaf, allowing boat traffic to pass through the heart of Chicago – a spectacular, deeply authentic Chicago event.

The museum is open Thursday-Monday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., between May and October. The museum is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Loop Around Tours are Fridays and Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Please call (312)977-0227 to reserve your spot.
For groups of 10 or more visiting during our regular hours, tickets are $4 per person. For school groups, tickets are $3 per person. Please call (312) 977-0227 at least 24 hours in advance of your group’s visit to the Bridgehouse Museum to make arrangements. Please note that the Bridgehouse Museum is limited to 79 visitors at a time.
