Thursday, February 22 is National Margarita Day and that means time to celebrate in the Chicagoland area or wherever you are. Leave it to the United States to give the iconic tequila cocktail its own day of celebration. The facts about the origin of the drink are murky with the first mention and recipe for a Margarita appearing in a men’s magazine in the early 1950’s, although some believe it was invented around the time of Prohibition. And why not – its original ingredients were simply tequila, lime and a smidge of Triple Sec. Some like it hot (with spice around the rim instead of just salt), others are into fruit or don’t mind the brain freeze of a frozen Margarita. You can ponder the history of the Margarita while celebrating National Margarita Day on Feb. 22 at any of these local spots that are saluting the cocktail with a rousing, “Ole”! At bars and restaurants across the country, it’s an all-day celebration of America’s most common tequila-based cocktail marked with discounted drinks and salty specials. Here are the day’s best deals both local and national, most available with or without salt, frozen or on the rocks. Participation varies, so check with your closest location before heading out.
