Free Children’s Concert – March 13

The Music Institute of Chicago (MIC) presents a free children’s concert on March 13 entitled “Let’s Make Music,” a fun and interactive children’s program for elementary-age audiences.  Free and open to the public, the free concert takes place Saturday, March 13 at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue in downtown Evanston.  The event begins at 9 am with an open house featuring an instrument petting zoo, early childhood demos, and refreshments, followed by a free concert at 10 am performed by MIC ensemble-in-residence Axiom Brass Quintet, filled with such games as “Find the Beat”, “Where is the Melody”, “Who is Playing”, and “Musical Chair”. To finish up, students join the brass as conductors and percussionists. Ages 1-12. Read more

Come out for some more free 2010 Discount Days in March as every Tuesday is free admission in March 2010.  The Adler is a recognized leader in science education, with a focus on inspiring young people to pursue careers in science.  A new exhibit for families in coming and March 26, the Adler Planetarium is launching the most immersive, hands-on exhibition ever created for families at the museum. The exhibition will be called Planet Explorers, and it will offer a great space adventure packed with excitement and fun. Free 2-Day Maple Syrup Festival in Chicago – Mar 20-21

Bring to kids and family to see how sap is tapped from maple trees at the 28th annual Maple Syrup Festival at North Park Village Nature Center, 5801 N. Pulaski Road on Saturday, March 20 and Sunday, March 21, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. No registration is required and the event is free for all ages.

During the two-day free maple syrup festival visitors can enjoy music and storytelling throughout the day, try tapping a maple tree, watch the sap boil and sample real maple syrup. There will be free guided nature walks to the “sugar bush” where visitors will learn more about the tapping process and enjoy maple tree tapping folklore. Read more

Free Kid’s Workshop at Home Depot – Sat Mar 6

Bring your kids out to the free Home Depot’s Kids Workshop this Saturday, March 6, 2010 between 9am and noon at all stores and they will get to build a free rain gauge to put up in the backyard or on the back porch. These workshops are designed for kids 5-12 years old.  The monthly free Home Depot’s Kids Workshops offer useful projects including the creation of toolboxes,free-home-depot-kids-workshops fire trucks and mail organizers, as well as more educational projects, such as a window birdhouse, bughouse or Declaration of Independence frame kit. Celebrate Pulaski Day with Free Polish Pride Celebration – Navy Pier – Feb 28

Chicago, the home to the largest Polish population outside of Warsaw, Poland, will host the free Polish Pride Celebration from noon to 5 p.m. Feb. 28 at Navy Pier. The free event takes place in observance of Pulaski Day. Born in Poland, Kazimierz Pulaski was a nobleman and an officer who came to America to assist with military training efforts during the Revolutionary War. Credited for saving George Washington’s life, Pulaski was officially made an American citizen Nov. 6, 2009, 230 years after his death. Read more
