FREE Concert at Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago: “A Fairy’s Kiss” – July 28 & 30

Hear a FREE classical concert as Hannu Lintu conducts The Fairy’s Kiss by Stravinsky, Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Capriccio Italien by Tchaikovsky in two concerts this week at the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago at the outdoor Jay Pritzker pavilion on July 28 and 30. Also included in the performance is pianist Markus Groh as a soloist. In this concert, Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2, embodies both his creative genius and flamboyant showmanship, while Stravinsky’s luminous ballet The Fairy’s Kiss ( based on a tale by Hans Christian Andersen) strikes a chord with family listeners. The set is completed by chaikovsky’s joyful Capriccio Italien.

Block Cinema, in conjunction with Northwestern University’s Summer Session, presents FREE movies outdoors along Evanston’s lakefront. This summer’s FREE classic movies—The Blues Brothers, The Breakfast Club, and Breaking Away—focus on Chicagoland and the Midwest. Our other FREE films are three of the biggest hits of the past year—Avatar, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Sherlock Holmes. Chicago folks, just jump on the El to enjoy this freebie!

The FREE movies begin at dusk on the East Lawn of the Norris University Center, 1999 Campus Drive. You are welcome to bring your own chairs and blankets. In the event of rain, films will be screened in McCormick Auditorium inside Norris Center.

More free concerts celebrating Chopin! Acclaimed jazz singer Grazyna Auguscik salutes Frederick Chopin in an free evening of visionary interpretations of the composer’s masterpieces on July 25 at Millenium Park. As part of a worldwide celebration of the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth, she will be joined by accordian virtuoso Jarek Bester from Poland, Matt Ulery(bass), the Chicago International Trombone Ensemble and a host of Chicago-based musicians, Howard Levy (harmonica and piano), Paulinho Garcia (guitar and vocal), Issa Boulos (ude), Ian Maksin (cello). Special guest is the Andrzej Jagodzinski Trio from Poland.

Free Bike Ride – “SDC Bike the Rails” – July 25

Spin Doctor Cyclewerks is sponsoring a free bike ride through the West Suburbs on Sunday July 25th. Named “SDC Bike the Rails,” it is aimed at the Chicago bicyclist who would love to ride in the far western suburbs if they knew where to ride. Check in at Spin Doctor Cyclewerks at 9:30am for a cup of coffee, Tour action, meet new riders, and Ride at 10am. This route developed during our many rides for the Chicagoland Bicycle Map 5th edition. Follow the Map as you ride to see how many more rides you could come back to in the future. We are always available to help you plan your route except we are closed on Wednesdays and Sundays for family.

Now is your chance to catch the Milwaukee District West Line from Union Station with your bike to arrive Bartlett at 9:29AM. If you missed it, Metra has worked with Active Trans to increase the number of bikes allowed on Metra from three to five. Spin Doctor Cyclewerks is one block north of Metra on Hickory Ave and will be open from 9:30 to 10am to register riders, preview the ride, and list sponsoring restaurants and businesses. We also have plenty of car parking in the Metra lot next to the store. Although there is no SAG, we will be riding the route and have cell phones for contact.

Enjoy a 56-mile ride through six forest preserves, a state park, on five regional trails, across three counties and with two other Metra stations along the way. Mostly hard surfaces with occasional crushed stone, the pace will be 13-14 mph. No one will be lost. Enjoy the fine dining in downtown Bartlett before choosing from several trains back to Union Station.

Lowe’s holds FREE Build and Grow Clinics every month throughout the year. The next one is Saturday, July 24 at 10 a.m. and children will get to use kid-friendly tools and glue and other neat stuff to craft an alien UFO spacecraft with blinking lights and stickers!

Come out for the FREE family workshop called “Things with Wings: Bees, Butterflies and Birds”, Saturday, July 24, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the fourth floor conference room at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St. The garden is buzzing with flying creatures of all shapes and sizes. Join as we explore some of their adaptations, learn some cool facts and then make a few crafts inspired by our winged friends. This great workshop also includes a free walk in the garden at the Lurie Garden in Millennium Park, where children can get acquainted with the flying creatures of the Lurie Garden and take home craft-based projects inspired by the bees, butterflies and birds around them.

Free Fiesta Del Sol Festival in Chicago – July 29-Aug 1

It’s time for the FREE 38 Annual Fiesta Del Sol on July 29-Aug 1, a huge four day family-friendly event that is alcohol and tobacco-free that is enjoyed by more than one million people. Put on by the Pilsen Neighbors Community Council , they organize Fiesta del Sol every year to help fund their efforts in the community. This huge festival is recognized as one of the four largest Latino street festivals in the United States. Come on out for the carnival rides, freebies by corporations, vendors selling trinkets, and lots of great Mexican food such as gorditas, flautas, and more.
