Free Downtown Chicago Lunchbreak Classical Music Concert – Mar 8

Take a lunch break in downtown Chicago on Monday, Mar 8th to listen to the free concert downtown by  Juliani Ensemble, a highly acclaimed chamber music ensemble comprised of world class musicians, has delighted Chicago audiences with inventive, energetic chamber music concerts since its inception in 1999.  The LunchBreak’s Classical Mondays offer a great free thing to do in downtown Chicago –  free concerts of classical, chamber music, and opera music in the Chicago Cultural Center’s Preston Bradley Hall, located at teh edge of the Loop near Millenium Park.

THE JULIANI ENSEMBLE has been a regular performing partner at the Chicago Cultural Center since 2000, presenting innovative, world-class concerts, and a live performance on WFMT radio. The Ensemble has remained unique because it expands and contracts its membership as necessary to meet the needs of programming. However, the core of the ensemble is Emily Seaberry Graef, founder and flutist, Frank Babbitt, violin, viola, and baritone, Cornelia Babbitt, cello, Jo Rodenburg, mezzo-soprano and Roger Moseley, piano. The Juliani Ensemble is currently initiating chamber music education programs with schools in the Chicago area.

What better way to spend the end of your weekend than hanging out and watching some free rock and roll cinema at the Empty Bottle in Chicago? A free rock movie at 7pm on March 7, 2010 and cheap drinks sounds like a pretty swell way to spend a Sunday evening, so come on down for End of the Century: The Ramones. Dubbed “a punk ‘Last Waltz“, this free documentary traces the seminal punk band’s trajectory from obscurity to fame to induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Celebrating their tenth anniversary, Atomic is taking their explosive blend of American and European jazz on tour with their new CD theater tilters Vol 1. While making no secret of their admiration for leading American jazz musicians, they regard the American and European jazz traditions as an inspiration rather than a restriction, as a springboard to set their own direction and position within jazz music. These diverse elements have inspired a musical style that is new, fresh, and original, winning audiences over wherever they play. The Chicago Cultural Center’s New Millennium/New Music series showcases avant-garde and improvised music by touring artists and local musicians.

Free Concert at Northwestern – Feb 25

On Feb 25, the Windpipe Chinese Ensemble which will be performing a free concert for the first time in North America this Thursday night Feb 25at Northwestern University. The free concert is a collaboration with Chicago-based Fulcrum Point to celebrate the Chinese New Year – the Year of the Tiger – which began on February 14.

The free show will be an eclectic juxtaposition of the new and the traditional. Fulcrum Point is a new-music ensemble that puts together fairly adventurous programs, while the Windpipe Chinese Ensemble is a nine-member group who perform on seventeen different traditional Chinese instruments. The groups plays a mixture of traditional and modern Chinese music, and Thursday’s program will consist of works by contemporary composers, including a pair of world premieres.

One new piece is Li Cheong’s “Drumming Ridge” for dizi, a bamboo transverse flute (a transverse flute is one that requires air blown across the hole and so is played horizontally, like the one we take to American band camp), and string quartet. The other is Ng Cheuk-yin’s “Tiger Sketch,” which will be accompanied by a video of comic artist Lee Chi-ching creating a tiger-themed painting. A half dozen other pieces will be performed, as well as a multimedia finale entitled “Cat and Rat – Legend of the Chinese Zodiac” based on the children’s book of the same name by Chinese illustrator and author Ed Young.

Celebrate Pulaski Day with Free Polish Pride Celebration – Navy Pier – Feb 28

Chicago, the home to the largest Polish population outside of Warsaw, Poland, will host the free Polish Pride Celebration from noon to 5 p.m. Feb. 28 at Navy Pier. The free event takes place in observance of Pulaski Day. Born in Poland, Kazimierz Pulaski was a nobleman and an officer who came to America to assist with military training efforts during the Revolutionary War. Credited for saving George Washington’s life, Pulaski was officially made an American citizen Nov. 6, 2009, 230 years after his death. Read more
