It’s time again for National French Fries Day. To honor our country’s fascination with these golden brown fried sticks, make sure to stop by the Ritz-Carlton Chicago’s deca Bar for free fries. The bar has announced it will give out complimentary housemade fries with the purchase of a cocktail on July 13, which is National French Fries Day, and July 14, which Bastille Day.

They tell us these won’t be ordinary french fries. The hotel bar uses Ohio potatoes to make its hand-cut fries. Flavors include truffle and duck fat fries made with smoked sea salt, or french fries made with lemon salt, fresh oregano and grated Parmigiano-Reggiano. Clearly not your McDonald’s fries.

Like many food holidays, the history of National French Fries Day is not easy to pinpoint. Many of these such holidays are proposed by food manufacturers or individuals somehow connected to the food or industry. French fries themselves, however, have a long history. They did not originate in France as the name implies, but actually in Belgium during the 1600′s. It is speculated that the term “French fries” was coined in World War 1 by American soldiers who were introduced to them there, and were so named because Belgians speak French.

Dr.Sandra Goldberg of A Silver Lining Foundation says “99% of folks qualify”, as there are no income restrictions or age restrictions.

Currently, the hospital partners are: University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center, Ingalls Hospital, Swedish Covenant Hospital, and South Shore Hospital. The hope is to get Loretto Hospital and Sinai Medical Center on board by the end of the year. Dr. Goldberg also hopes to get sites in Indiana and Rockford added as well. The average wait time for the screening mammogram is 2-3 months, depending on the testing site. A Silver Lining prefers that a patient provide a mammogram order from her own doctor, but they can usually figure out an alternative plan if that is not feasible.

Enjoy one of the great free farmers markets held all over Chicago. Chicago is a town where folks are looking for locally grown, seasonal food, made by local farmers using sustainable practices, and as a result the popularity of open air food shopping has grown substantially. Today Chicago plays host to over 30 Farmer Markets across many different neighborhoods with farmers from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin participating. Shopping at a farmers market can be a family affair for shoppers and farmers alike. It’s not uncommon to see an entire family of farmers with children and adults alike helping customers, especially in the busy summer months when children are out of school.

Most, but not all, of the markets are sponsored by the city and occur on one day of the week with the exception of a few of the more popular markets such as the Green City Market. Each market is open from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., unless otherwise indicated. Over time the locations and days of some markets has shifted as the city is constantly working to provide balanced coverage to different neighborhoods throughout the week. The only days there are no markets open are Monday and Friday. While most markets begin on the first week of the month listed be sure to check your local market before visiting because a few begin in the second week of the month.

Chicago’s Farmers Markets bring more than 70 vendors selling fresh fruits, vegetables, plants and flowers to over 20 neighborhoods throughout the City of Chicago. Markets are held Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday around the city.

ABOUT MARIO BATALI

Mario Batali (born September 9, 1960) is an American chef, writer, restaurateur and media personality. He is widely regarded as a foremost authority on the history and culture of Italian cuisine, with extensive knowledge of regional and local variations. Batali was born in Yakima, Washington, the son of Marilyn and Armandino Batali, owner of Salumi in Seattle. His father was an engineer for Boeing for thirty years, but after retirement, opened a meat-curing shop in Seattle. He is of Italian ancestry on his father’s side, and English and French Canadian ancestry on his mother’s side.

During college, Batali worked as a dishwasher at “Stuff Yer Face” restaurant in New Brunswick, New Jersey, quickly moving up to pizzaman. Batali went on to serve as an assistant in the kitchens at the “Six Bells” public house in the Kings Road, Chelsea, under Marco Pierre White, La Tour d’Argent in Paris, Moulin de Mougins in Provence, and the Waterside Inn, outside London. In 1985, he worked as a sous chef at the Four Seasons Clift in San Francisco before being promoted to helm the Four Seasons Biltmore Hotel’s La Marina restaurant in Santa Barbara.[citation needed] At twenty-seven, Batali was the highest paid young chef in the company. In 1989, he resigned and moved to the northern Italian village of Borgo Capanne to apprentice in the kitchen at La Volta, where he sought to master a traditional style of Italian cooking inspired by his grandmother, Leonetta Merlino.

In 1993, Batali opened “Po”. In 1998, with business partner Joseph Bastianich (son of Lidia Bastianich), he went on to start “Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca”. The pair have since opened seven additional restaurants, Lupa (1999), Esca (2000), Otto Enoteca Pizzeria (2003), Casa Mono (2004), Bar Jamon (2004), Bistro Du Vent (2004, closed in 2006), Del Posto (2005), Enoteca San Marco (2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada), B&B Ristorante (2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada), CarneVino (2008 in Las Vegas, Nevada) and a shop named Italian Wine Merchants (1999) which is no longer under Batali’s ownership.
