MCA: Free Admission on Second Saturdays – May 9

Every second Saturday the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago invites families to learn about the art of our time through hands-on art activities, scavenger hunts, Look ‘n’ Learn stations, and more. Admission is FREE For families with children 12 and under.  Activities are appropriate for all ages.

This month on May 9th: Hours –  11 am – 3 pm.  Investigate the work of the Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson with activities that focus on the elements of nature. Create wearable art that plays with light, learn about optical illusions and more.


1. Story Time
Jan Greenberg reads from her books Side by Side and Action Jackson and signs books at the MCA Store afterwards.   Reading at 11:30 am in the Tot Spot, ground floor

2. Kaleidoscope Fashion
Create wearable art objects that play with sunlight and color.

3. Color Weaving
Weave color strips and learn which colors compliment each other.

4. Shape Tunnel
Create an installment with colored lights and reflective shapes that you can manipulate.

5. Camera Obscura
Learn about optics as our studios transform into a dark room that reflects images from the bright outdoors.

6. Tot Spot
Refreshments await you on the ground floor, where you can recharge in between art-making activities.

Groups of 20 or more must contact the education department at 312.397.3841 two weeks before the event to determine if space is available. Additional fees may apply.
