This summer, the Art Institute of Chicago is free on Thursday and Friday nights from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The Art Institute of Chicago collection now encompasses more than 5,000 years of human expression from cultures around the world, and the school’s graduate program is continually ranked as one of the best in the country. Within the next decade, a new complex will continue this process of growth.
The $294 million Modern Wing, built to house the Institute’s great collection of 20th and 21st century work, is a complicated exercise in reconciliation. A resolutely modern building, it not only manages to gently introduce itself into the greenery of Chicago’s Millennium Park but also draws in three tricky neighbors — the original Art Institute, the active commuter railway lines that run between them, and the city of Chicago, where around any corner there’s another architectural masterpiece asking just what you’re doing here.
Thursday–Friday 10:30–9:00 (Free Admission 5:00–9:00)
Please note that the museum is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s days.
Visitors enjoy free admission from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. every Thursday and Friday, Memorial Day through Labor Day, during Target Free Summer Evenings.
