Get a Free Computer in Chicago

Could you use a FREE computer in the Chicago area in 2013? Are you willing to put in a few hours in Chicago and get a free computer in return? (or willing to help others to recycle and save computers from landfills?) FreeGeek Chicago is a GREAT not-for-profit community organization in Chicago that recycles used free computers and parts to provide functional computers, education, internet access and job skills training to those who want them.

FreeGeek Chicago does most of this work with volunteers, who disassemble the donated free computer equipment and test the components, which are either recycled as electronic scrap or reused in refurbished systems, called FreekBoxes that volunteers can get for free for working there.

Read our previous post here that explains how it works.    Volunteers who complete 24 hours in OpenBuild will receive $75.00 in FreeGeek Rewards to the FreeGeek Store. FreeGeek Rewards can be used to get a free refurbished computer (desktops starting at $50.00, laptops starting at $75.00) or tow ards any other refurbished item in the FreeGeek Store. Volunteers can also build out their own desktop from barebones systems and any of our system parts; we’ll price it and take $75.00 off.

Please read about OpenBuild for information on volunteer activities, new-volunteer orientation, and who can participate.
