Make Plans: FREE St Patrick’s Day 2018 Parades in Chicago – March 11 and 17

Start making your plans to enjoy three of the best FREE St Patrick’s Day Parades in Chicago next month. First, make your way to downtown Chicago to see the Chicago Saint Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday March 17th, 2018.  The parade starts at Balbo and Columbus. The parade units will proceed north on Columbus Drive and the viewing stand will be located in front of Buckingham Fountain, with Grand Marshal 40th Ward Alderman, Patrick O’Connor and Guest of Honor, Justice Anne Burke, Founder of Chicago Special Olympics, 50th Anniversary,  both who exemplify “The Irish Bond of Community and Service” ​to Chicago.



When is the 2018 Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade?

The Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade begins at noon, but the festivities start with the dyeing of the Chicago River at 9am on Saturday, March 17, 2018. For optimal views of the fluorescent green water, head to the east side of the Michigan Avenue bridge, the west side of the Columbus Drive bridge or Upper and Lower Wacker Drive between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive.

2018 Northwest Irish Parade

Do you live north or on the northside of Chicago?  Check out the the Northwest Irish Parade on Sunday March 11th is a celebration of faith, family, and heritage on the Northwest side of Chicago. Now in its 15th year, the Northwest Side St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has grown. The Committee was founded with the goal of bringing the Chicago’s Northwest side area a celebration of Irish involvement in the American experience. Last year’s parade was a tremendous success, as friends and families have greatly expanded.  On Sunday March 11, 2018, the Northwest Side Irish will host their 15th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This year’s celebration will include a tribute to community based efforts on behalf of our veterans and military families. There are one hundred parade group participants and approximately twenty five hundred marching and thousands of spectators who will attend the Northwest Side Irish Friends and Family Parade.

2018 South Side Irish Parade

The 2018 South Side Irish Parade will begin at noon on Sunday March 11th, 2018. The parade will step off from 103rd and proceed down Western Avenue to 115th Street. The 2018 Emerald Isle Mile, sponsored by Running Excels, begins at 11:30am just prior to the start of the South Side Irish Parade. A portion of the proceeds help offset the cost of the parade. The South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee announced Special Olympics Chicago will lead the 40th Annual parade as the Grand Marshal. In 2018, Special Olympics Chicago will celebrate its 50th year of offering athletic training and competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Chicago is one of the largest programs in the country offering training and competition for more than 7,500 athletes in 22 sports throughout the year. The organization provides opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Special Olympic programming is available in over 122 Chicago Public Schools throughout the city and in 23 Chicago Park District locations.

Amyloidosis Support Groups and The Martin McGarry Family were named the 2018 Parade Honoree. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to the support, education and empowerment of Amyloidosis patients, caregivers and former caregivers. Amyloidosis is a rare disease caused by deposits of amyloid protein fibrils in one or more organs causing the organ to malfunction.

The South Side Irish Parade is a family-friendly event and has a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol along the parade route. It is strictly enforced in accordance with a City of Chicago ordinance which includes fines up to $1000 for open containers in the public way. The annual South Side Irish Parade is a great time to spend with family and friends, both in bars and at house parties. We encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly and help keep the annual tradition a safe, family friendly event. Many of the Western Avenue bars support the parade and we hope you will support them in a responsible manner helping us ensure everyone has a safe, enjoyable parade. Sláinte!
