Shops across the country are marking June 1, 2018 with fried freebies and delectable deals. From traditional glazed to chocolate sprinkle, save some dough by chowing down on these breakfast bargains. Here is where to get free doughnuts on National Doughnut Day. Celebrated annually on the first Friday in June, the day of the pastry was established in 1938 to honor The Salvation Army Donut Lassies, women who served the treats to soldiers during World War I. “The doughnut was and continues to be a symbol of the comfort and support that The Salvation Army provides to more than 23 million people in need each year,” said Lt. Col. Ward Matthews, Salvation Army secretary for national community relations and development in a statement.
Krispy Kreme is offering a free doughnut of your choice, while LaMar’s Donuts is giving customers a free doughnut — any variety with a hole in it.

Potbelly Sandwich Shop: While not a National Doughnut Day deal, June 1 is the chain’s 41st birthday and it’s offering Potbelly Perks members a free sandwich with purchase of a sandwich. To join, sign up at www.potbelly.com/perks or download the Android or iPhone app.
Edible Arrangements is offering a free Edible Donut (a doughnut-shaped slice of Granny Smith apple dipped in chocolate) to customers at participating locations.
Entenmann’s is holding a contest to find its next Chief Donut Officer. The winner will receive $5,000 and a one-year supply of donuts.
Fractured Prune is offering one free OC Sand doughnut at participating stores.
Every single Walmart in America will give away free doughnuts to customers. The retailer expects to give away 1.2 million doughnuts nationwide by the end of the day.
Honorable mention: At five locations around the country, Burger King is offering the Whopper Donut, a traditional Whopper with a hole cut into the middle. Each customer will also receive a mini slider with their purchase.

The Wicker Park outpost of the artisan chain will give out a free half-dozen doughnuts to the first 100 guests right as National Doughnut Day kicks off: At midnight June 1. All other locations will offer one glazed donut with any purchase. Wicker Park, Streeterville, Lakeview, East Roosevelt and West Loop businesses open at 6:30 a.m. The Millennium Park store opens at 6 a.m. and the Mag Mile shop at 7 a.m. Stan’s owner Rich Labriola said in a press release that this year, they plan to give away 10,000 doughnuts.
