FREE Legal Advice in Chicago and Legal Help By Phone – May 16

Got legal troubles or just legal questions?  Mark your calendars and plan to get free legal advice and free legal counsel. The Chicago Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service and the Illinois State Bar Association will host their monthly “Call-A-Lawyer” program from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2020.   Volunteer attorneys will give free legal advice over the phone to Chicagoland residents free legal services in chicagowho call (312) 554-2001. Attorneys will be available to answer general questions on a variety of legal issues including bankruptcy, domestic relations, immigration, personal injury and Social Security.

“This is just a great opportunity to spend a few minutes with a lawyer if you just have a legal question or just want to get some advice or where to turn to,” Brenda Ott, director of the lawyer referral, tells WBBM Newsradio.     “It can be everything from somebody calling in saying, ‘My neighbor’s tree is encroaching on my property. What can I do?’ or ‘I think I might need a will or an estate plan, who do I talk to?’ Anything like that,” Ott says.    Callers may explain their situations to an attorney who will then suggest self-help strategies to resolve their legal issues. If callers need further legal services, they will be advised to see their own attorney. Or, if they wish to hire a lawyer, they can go through the CBA Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) and pay a $30 fee.    “I do want to emphasize for the Saturday program to call in there’s no fee for that,” Ott says. The LRS has over 300 pre-screened, qualified lawyers experienced in almost every area of law.

Attorneys will help answer questions, suggest self-help strategies and offer advice to resolve any issues, the association said.   If your questions are beyond the scope of the attorney’s practice area, they’ll refer you to someone with expertise in the area. You can also contact the association’s Lawyer Referral Service, which is a network of more than 200 prescreened lawyers with experience covering almost every area of law.   For more information, visit CBA’s website or call 312-554-2001.

Usually held the third Saturday of every month, Call-A-Lawyer is a program that provides an opportunity for the public to call in and ask questions and get free legal information over the phone. Call (312) 554-2001 from 9 a.m. to 12:00 noon on the dates listed below to speak to a volunteer Lawyer Referral Service attorney for general legal advice and self-help strategies.
