National Lipstick Day means FREE Cosmetics

National Lipstick Day is celebrated on July 29 this year and it’s better than Christmas in July. The holiday has grown in popularity as more brands offer freebies and deals to help celebrate. The annual celebration honors one of the beauty industry’s oldest and most beloved cosmetic products.   Here’s everything you need to know about lipstick and the special day — including where to score free products.

Where does lipstick come from?

The practice of painting lips dates back thousands of years.
Some of the first known people to do so lived in Mesopotamia near the Sumerian city of Ur, according to the book “Read My Lips: A Cultural History of Lipstick.” That’s roughly around present-day southern Iraq. There, Queen Schub-ad made a paste from white lead and crushed red rocks to color her lips.
From there, the lip-painting trend spread through the region and across the world. It made its way to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. It survived the Middle Ages and Italian Renaissance and more.
Ultimately, it was Western European settlers that brought lipstick to American shores.
To this day, lipstick is still one of the most recognizable makeup products in the world.
Honestly, homegirl Schub-ad was way ahead of her time.

In 2017, M.A.C. Cosmetics gave away a free full-size product and beauty-counter lines wrapped throughout department stores. Now, the need to stand in line isn’t necessary and you can score deals by shopping right from the comfort of your couch.

National Lipstick Day on July 29th encourages you to wear your best color. For some, lipstick is the only makeup requirement. Whether sheer and light, dark or bright, July 29th calls for all kinds of lipstick.

Throughout the ages, controversy surrounded lipstick. British Parliament banned it in 1770 calling it a devilish attempt to trick men into marriage. In some circles, lipstick was associated with witchcraft. Occasionally, lipstick contained poisonous materials.

It is said Sarah Bernhardt created a scandal by applying “lip rouge” in public. Surprisingly, George Washington supposedly wore lipstick. While Queen Victoria considered wearing lipstick impolite, one of her statesmen had a different opinion. During World War II, Winston Churchill thought the lip color boosted morale in an excellent way.

Of course, versatility is lipstick’s brand. It changes with a mood or with the scenery. Whether lipstick defines your attitude or channels your inner spirit, wear it on July 29th. No matter your style, lipstick adds a subtle accent or a bold statement. Let your lips speak. However, punctuate it with your lipstick.
