Free Lunch Concert: Special Consensus Bluegrass – Sep 11

This Friday, September 11, Special Consensus Bluegrass is putting on a free lunch concert at the Harold Washington Public Library downtown. The free concert is from noon-1 PM and will move indoors in case of rain. An acoustic bluegrass band that began performing in the Midwest nearly 30 years ago, The Special Consensus brings its show to the Millenium Park stage.

Free Concert with the Stars of the Lyric Opera – Sept 11

Free Concert: If ticket prices for Opera stop you in your tracks, come to Millennium Park for a free concert on Sept 11 for a grand night of singing with some of opera’s most famous stars (many of them featured in Lyric Opera’s 2009-2010 season). Sir Andrew Davis conducts the Lyric Opera Orchestra while Deborah Voigt, James Morris and other opera stars take the stage in a free concert dedicated to the men and women of the United States Armed Services. The free concert takes place from7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 11, at Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street.

Free Concert by CSO on October 17 – Free Tickets Available Sep 8

Free Concert: To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Burnham Plan, the CSO will put on a free concert on October 17 at 3 pm featuring Anton Bruckner’s Second Symphony conducted by Riccardo Muti, who will take over as the CSO’s music director in 2010. Free tickets “go on sale” on September 8.

Free Jazz Concert: Willie Pickens and Ron Perillo – August 27

On Thursday, August 27th from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, you can enjoy a free concert featuring a display of dueling pianos that reveals the full spectrum of the modern jazz piano tradition. Both Willie Pickens and Ron Perillo will be featured on piano. Willie Pickens has been an inspiration to one of the world’s greatest drummers, Elvin Jones, while the lighter, more modern tones are more likely to come from Ron Perrillo. This free concert features Willie Pickens on piano; Donald Harrison on saxophones; Ron Perrillo composer and on piano; Kobie Watkins on drums; Edwin Bayard on saxophones; Pat Mallinger on Native American Flute; Pharez Whitted on trumpet, flugelhorn; Tom Garling on trombone; and Dennis Carroll on contrabass, electric bass.

FREE CONCERT: This week the Edible Audio Picnic lunchtime free concert on Monday August 24 at Millenium Park brings Brooklyn-based beats producer Eliot Lipp and his Chicago-based friend Leo 123 in Dark Party, using electronic music influenced by hip-hop, disco, electro, and techno. Caural and K-Kruz, two of Chicago’s finest electronic producers, open the free concert for Dark Party.

Northside SummerFest ($5) – August 14-16

Although its not free ($5), the North Side Summerfest at Lincoln and Irving Park (NSS) ranks with the top festivals in Chicago, with more than 20,000 expected to attend. AS summer fades, this weekend will give summer a rockin’ send-off, with a full lineup of the area’s best bands, a wide selection of arts and crafts northside-summer-festand a mouth-watering array of food and drinks from all corners of the city. NSS is about as much fun as you could safely pack into three days.

Glitch Mob Gives Free Concert – TONIGHT! – August 9

As Lollapalooza weekend winds down in Chicago, Smart Bar will present one more event to cap off a week of music throughout the city tonight Sunday August 9, 2009. The Glitch Mob will perform a free concert live in Smart Bar in a free event open to the public. They will be joined by Phaded and Striz doing DJ sets.

Free Chicago Jazz Series Continues on August 6

FREE JAZZ! The popular Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz series featuring Chicago’s leading jazz artists continues its free concert series August 6 with Rudresh Mahanthappa’s Chicago Legacy Ensemble featuring Bunky Green. Each performance has a distinct tie to the city and begins with a showcase of young, local jazz musicians. The series of six free concerts in Millenium Park highlights a range of styles – from Eastern Indian beats to Western BeBop classics – all performed by musicians with strong Chicago connections.
