Chicago’s official “Little Italy” neighborhood plays host to the free Taylor Street Festa Italiana festival this August 7-9! Free Admission! Free Music!, Free Concerts! The Taylor Street Festa Italiana lines the streets with numerous food specialties represented in this neighborhood as part of a celebration of classic Italian culture combined with the new wave of commercial, residential and streetscape development in this beautiful area.
This week, the MCA’s Tuesdays on the Terrace features a free jazz concert from Chicago saxophone legend Fred Anderson from 5:30–8pm. The outdoor terrace overlooking the sculpture garden will come alive as veteran jazz saxophonist, Fred Anderson, performs his own distinctive and soulful style. A leader of Chicago’s saxophone community, Anderson co-founded the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and owns local jazz club, Velvet Lounge, where many musicians have launched their careers.
With the passing of the “pop king”, come join Congressman Danny K. Davis, local singers Shari Addison (BET’s “Sunday Best”), Carl Thomas and Ben One, Jackie Taylor (Black Ensemble Theater) and others for the free event called “The Man from Neverland: A Tribute to the Music and Memory of Michael Jackson”.
This free concert downtown on July 27 entitled “A Chinese Voyage” honors the late founder of the Chinese Fine Arts Society, Barbara Tiao and her contributions to developing Chinese music and arts programs and is presented as part of Chinese Cultural Week in Chicago.

Jazz fans are in for an evening of hot sounds at the Humboldt Park Boathouse on July 17 as the Third Annual Latin Jazz Festival gives us three free concerts. Kicking off the free Latin Jazz Festival evening will be Paulinho Garcia, one of Chicago’s musical treasures, bringing the joyous sound of his home country of Brazil to the Windy City. The second act of the evening will be John Rodriguez and Latin Inspiracion, considered some of Chicago’s finest in Cuban Jazz and Latin Jazz.
Closing out the night will be the The Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, a band that is quickly becoming one of the most talked about bands in Chicago.

Free Concert: The sounds of rock, country and oldies will fill the air of the John Hancock Center’s Garden Plaza on Saturday afternoon, July 18, with “Blind Aid,” a free concert featuring three local bands consisting of some musicians who are blind or visually impaired. This special summertime event takes place in the John Hancock Plaza at 875 North Michigan Avenue, from 1-3 pm, and is sponsored by The Chicago Lighthouse for People Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired and Aveda, the internationally acclaimed beauty care store located at John Hancock Center.
Ready to square dance? Tangleweed will be performing a free concert July 10 at the Chase Pavilion for Great Performers of Illinois Festival. Tangleweed is a band of five forward-looking musical reactionaries from Chicago, Illinois. While the band’s instrumentation is standard bluegrass, their music is anything but. With a repertoire both broad and deep, one listener described them as sounding like “a band playing on a pirate ship off the coast of New Orleans in the 1920s”.
As part of the Great Performers in Illinois series, Dennis DeYoung, former singer of the band STYX, will be performing a free concert July 12 at 7:30 pm with his seven-piece band at Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion, where he will receive the Great Performer of Illinois award for outstanding contributions to popular music and American culture.
Are you a diehard rock fan who can’t afford a Lollapalooza concert ticket? Now there’s another potential way to get into the big fest in Chicago’s Grant Park on August 7, August 8 and August 9: Do volunteer work for it. Lollapalooza is an American music festival, which now takes place annually in Chicago’s Grant Park. The festival showcases a variety of rock acts and also has craft booths and other performances. In most cases, you’ll need tickets to attend the three day event, but if you get creative, you may get free admission to the concerts.
